My mentor teacher is Mrs. Diana Sanchez . She teaches Pre-AP Algebra II and On-level Algebra II. She
is in her 13th year of teaching at Alief Hastings High School. She is of Mexican decent,
as is several teachers and administrators at Alief Hastings High School. Mrs. Sanchez’s classes are made up very diverse students, which resemble the school’s population
as a whole. The classes are built around warm-ups, lecture, guided practice, and independent practice. The students know the procedures very well; they can follow it even in Mrs. Sanchez’s absence. The advisory is built around students who have failed the TAKS Math test. The focus is to help and guide the students’ test-taking ability, decision making strategies, and
build test stamina. Most of the students seem withdrawn at time but for the majority
of the class are engaged. After TAKS has taken place the advisory class becomes
more of a thirty minute break for the students from instruction. On A day Mrs.
Sanchez’s 3rd and 4th periods are Pre-AP Algebra II classes.
These students are very bright and tend to be self driven. Mrs. Sanchez’s 1st period is a regular
Algebra II class. Students in this class are also a treat. They work and participate just as well as the Pre-AP classes. Mrs. Sanchez has 5th Period off this day.
On B day Mrs. Sanchez’s 1st Period is a Pre-AP Algebra II class and the only one that day. 4th and 5th periods are regular Algebra II classes. The students her seem to be a little more reluctant to participate and are more reserved in their demeanor. In terms of grades, all classes are relatively the same, composed of about 20% excellent
students, 65% average achievement students, and 15% low to very-low achievers. I
have taken full responsibility of these classes and the students are very responsive and connected to the class, especially
when given open-ended questions. In conclusion, all of Mrs. Sanchez’s students
are bright young men and women.
