Subject: Math 8                                   Date:  08/21/06

Grade:   8th                                          Time: 3rd and 4th

School: Alief Middle School

District:  Alief Independent School District

Ø      Domain (TEXES): 8.1A. Compare and order rational numbers in various forms including integers, percents, and positive and negative fractions and decimals.

Ø      Standards:

Mathematics Standard I:

Number Concepts:  The mathematics teacher understands and uses numbers, number systems and their structures, operations and algorithms, quantitative reasoning, and technology appropriate to teach the statewide curriculum (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills [TEKS]) in order to prepare students to use mathematics.

Ø      Competency (ies):

Competency 001: The teacher understands the real number system and its structure, operations, algorithms, and representations.

Ø      Technology Strands: Overhead Projector.

Ø      Purpose: Can be used in making purchases, rating items, ordering in sports events, etc.

Ø      Focus/Introduction:  Engage prior knowledge using warm up activity covering simple conversions; decimals to percentages; percentages to decimals; and fractions to decimals.  Cover ordering on number line.

Ø      Learner Expectations/Outcomes:  Students will be able to convert and order fractions to decimals, decimals to percentages, and percentages to decimals with 80% success rate.   Vocabulary: Ascending, Descending.

Ø      Instructional Input:

a.        Modeling: The teacher will model making conversions on overhead projector, showing students “two decimal places to the left” method for converting percentages to decimals, “two decimals to the right” method for converting decimals to percentages, and “T.I.B.O” method for converting fractions to decimals.

b.      Checking For Understanding:  Students participate in group activity. Each group chooses five cards at random. Each card has a percentage, fraction, or decimal on the back.  Groups will convert all cards to decimal form and then put cards in ascending and descending order.

c.       Reteaching:  Teacher will review conversions made by each group and review previously covered methods to correct any mistakes made by students.

d.      Guided Practice: Students will complete 10 conversion and ordering problems with assistance from teacher.  Teacher will guide students to help them complete problems.

e.       Reteaching(2): If 85% of class is not successful after guided practice.  Methods will be reviewed again on overhead using both pictorial representation and oral.  Real-world situations will be used to reiterate ordering techniques and vocabulary words “ascending” and “descending.”

f.        Independent Practice:  Students will receive “Conversion Explosion” worksheet.

g.      Closing:  Teacher will review all methods covered for the class.

h.      Closing Questions:

                                                              i.      “In what types of occupations might being able to make conversions come in handy?”

ii.      “In what types of occupations might ordering be useful”

iii.      “When is ordering most commonly used?”

iv.      “What other acronyms could be used to memorize method of converting fractions to decimals?”

                                                             v.      “How could you use ‘ascending in a sentence?

vi.      “How could you use ‘ascending’ in a sentence?”
