-Domain (TEXES): 8.2 Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning: The student selects and uses appropriate operations to solve problems and justify solutions.
B: use appropriate operations to solve problems involving rational numbers in problem situations.

-Standards:
Mathematics Standard I:
Number Concepts: The mathematics teacher understands and uses numbers, number systems and their structures, operations and algorithms, quantitative reasoning, and technology appropriate to teach the statewide curriculum (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills [TEKS]) in order to prepare students to use mathematics.

-Competency (ies):
Competency 001: The teacher understands the real number system and its structure, operations, algorithms, and representations.

-Technology Strands: Overhead Projector.

-Purpose: Can be used to find sale tax on an item, sale price of an item, and amount discounted on an item.

-Focus/Introduction: Engage prior knowledge using warm up ativity covering previous concepts of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals; Introduce "Rules to Changing Percents to Decimals," "Rules to Multiplying Decimals" and "How To Find The Percent of A Number."

-Learner Expectations/Outcomes: Students will be able to multiply decimals; change percents to decimals; and find the percent of a number. Vocabulary: Discount, sale price, sales tax, etc.

-Instructional Input:

a. Modeling: The teacher will model using the "Rules to Changing Percents to Decimals," "Finding Discounts," and "Finding Sales Price," using both mathematic and real world scenarios.

b. Checking For Understanding: Students will receive questions on overhead and given time to complete them. Students will be monitored to assess understanding.

c. Reteaching: Teacher will review, with examples, "Rules to Making Percents Into Decimals," "Rules to Multiplying Decimals," and "How to Find The Percent of A Number." If enough time, teacher will introduce "Napier's Bones" to the class.

d. Guided Practice: Students will complete 5 practice problems on decimals, including all operators.

e. Reteaching (2): If 85% of class is not successful after guided practice, methods will be reviewed again on overhead using pictorial representation, oral representation, and real-world situations.

f. Independent Practice: Students will receive "How Do You Make a Vegetable Necklace" worksheet.

g. Closing: Teacher will review all methods covered for the class.

h. Closing Questions:

i. "In what types of occupations might having the ability to change percents to decimals come in handy?"

ii. "In what situations might being able to calculate discounts and sales price be useful?"

iii. "How else can 'Napier's Bones' be used?"
